Questions buyers ask

CMR or SMR?

CMR drives write tracks side by side and keep their speed under sustained writes, which matters in NAS and RAID arrays. SMR drives overlap tracks to fit more data for less money but slow down when rewriting; avoid them in RAID and ZFS.

NAS, desktop or surveillance drive?

NAS drives (IronWolf, WD Red) handle 24/7 use, vibration in multi-bay enclosures and RAID error recovery. Surveillance drives (SkyHawk, WD Purple) are tuned for constant video writes. Desktop drives are the cheapest per TB for a single PC.

5400 or 7200 RPM?

7200 RPM drives are faster, especially in random access, but louder and warmer. 5400–5900 RPM drives are quieter and fine for backups, media and NAS storage over a network.

Why sort by price per TB?

It puts drives of every size on one scale. Larger drives are often cheaper per terabyte, but the best value changes with sales, so the list updates as prices move.
